What to send your editor with each episode

A clear brief makes a faster edit.
The quality of an edit depends on what the editor receives. A folder of files with no explanation leads to guesses, and guesses lead to rounds of corrections. A short, clear handover takes you ten minutes and often saves days. Here is what to send with every episode.
1. The original recordings, not exports
Send the highest quality files you have. For a remote interview, that means the separate track for each speaker, in WAV if the platform allows it. For video, send the original camera files, not a compressed version from a call. Name the files clearly, for example with the episode number and the speaker name.
2. A short episode brief
Write a few lines: the episode title, the guest name and the main topic. Say who the audience is and what tone you want, for example relaxed and conversational, or tight and professional. This helps the editor decide what to keep and what to trim without having to ask.
3. Names and spellings
Names of guests, companies, products and places are easy to get wrong, and they are the first thing a guest notices. Send the correct spelling of every name that appears, and any unusual words. The editor can then get captions and show notes right the first time.
4. Timestamps and notes
If you remember a section that should be removed, such as a private comment, a long tangent or a technical problem, note the time. Do the same for the best moments, because those become clips and highlights. Even a rough note like "around 23 minutes, remove the story about the client" is very useful.
5. Your brand assets
Share your logo, brand colours, fonts, intro and outro music, and cover art. Keep them in one shared folder so you never have to send them again. Consistent branding is what makes a series feel like one show.
6. The deadline and the finished format
Say when you need the episode and where it will be published. Tell your editor which files you expect back, for example the final audio, a video version, a set of clips and a transcript. When both sides know the finish line, nothing is missed at the end.
Save this list as a template and reuse it for every episode. After two or three rounds, the handover becomes a habit and the edits become faster.
